Our close colleague (and Grammy award winner!) Matt Taylor of Varnish Studio, Inc., came to us with a request for a fluid, dynamic website to function as his portfolio.
As Matt’s business depends on showing the versatility, bright colors and extremely high quality of the music, film and videogame industry packaging he designs, we were challenged to devise a site that maximized large, high-resolution visuals and interesting interaction while mitigating page load and site performance issues often associated with JavaScript intensive sites.
We used a single page layout to show both the work offered and the detailed views. Everything is tightly packed with detail, allowing the user to find what they need quickly or explore the intricate designs.
Portfolio projects are loaded asynchronously into the main view. Descriptions are loaded below the art, and the user can tab through a selection of large images to get a better sense of the project.

Using the Flickr API to bypass rate-restrictions of the Instgram API, we're pulling cross-posted images in realtime to display a feed of images from Matt's daily routine.
We extensively modified a standard WordPress core with CSS3 and jQuery to display animation and showcase Varnish’s stunning visual body of work. We focused on large, colorful work samples and imbued the site with as much of Matt’s attitude and aesthetic as we could possibly fit. Since Varnish produces in impeccable art for everyone from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to the Lost Abbey Brewing Company, we tied in Matt’s hand-selected Instagram feed, to show as much visual style as possible.
